Everyone got quite a shock on The Bachelor this week when Sasha, a contestant of Russian heritage, decided to eat the rose that was given to her by her suitor.  She has copped a lot of criticism, but here at Street Corner, we’ve spoken to health experts and if you’re not eating flowers…then YOU’RE the one with the problem.

In fact, we reckon you might already be eating flowers without even knowing it.  Flowers are common in cuisines all over the world.  You’ve probably tasted crushed lillies and chrysanthemums in Asian food.  If you’re eating at hipster cafes, we think you’ve had one of those weird salads with the flower garnish on the side.  And you know what?  We bet that you’re no stranger to having a bay leaf in a big bowl of spaghetti bolognaise.

That’s right.  You do eat flowers after all.  Yeah.  We thought so.

We all should be.  But we should be eating more of them.

Our Street Corner nutrition expert says flower petals contain nearly 90% water, so they are actually an incredible source of hydration.  Eating 1200 petals is the equivalent of a small glass of water, so eating flowers is certainly a convenient way to keep hydrated through the day.

And they are packed full of vitamins.  Rose petals contain Vitamin C.  Well, nearly everything contains Vitamin C, but we can’t think of a more fun way to keep winter colds and flu at bay, than chewing away on some tasty rose petals.  Many ancient medicines also contained flower petal extracts to treat even more serious conditions and help with pain relief.  They’re a sure fire way to help you pack in more vitamins and minerals.

A ROSE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AT BAY: The health benefits of eating Roses are incredible.

Roses are also calorie free.   Which means you can keep your slender figure in check while still enjoying a healthy snack that will leave you feeling full.

And believe it or not, if you’re a vegan , you’re 100 percent in luck because roses and other flowers are 100 percent vegan.  And the best part is, that while you are eating the flower, you will be chewing for long enough to shut up for a few seconds about being a vegan.

So the results are in.  Flowers are good for you.   And Sasha is exactly the smart one.

But don’t take our word for it.  Take the word of one of the healthiest guys on the planet.  Homer Simpson has been eating flowers for years.
