Panthers Youth League Teams Win Three
The Penrith Basketball Association Youth League teams were both in action on the weekend, with the men and women at home to the Sutherland Sharks on Saturday, then the men back in action on Sunday against the Bathurst Goldminers. The Panthers would take three wins from the weekend, including an 88-51 drubbing of the Sharks and a tight 80-73 win over the Goldminers. The Panthers women made all of the early running against the Sharks but eventually had to hold on grimly to escape with a 65-60 win. The Penrith men were in charge of their game against the Sharks from the outset, playing their absolute best in both the first and fourth quarters as they grabbed a 37-point win. The Penrith Youth League women were also in charge early against the Sharks but after leading by fifteen points at half time, found themselves struggling to win in the closing stages of the game. The Sharks women won the second half 40-30 but could not reel in the Panthers, eventually falling by a scant 5 points. Sundays game against Bathurst was always going to be a tough one for the Panthers men, with the return of Australian representative Laurance Mifsud to the Goldminers line-up. The Goldminers led 23-15 in the first term, then 42-34 at half time. The third quarter belonged to the Panthers, out-scoring the Goldminers 28-17 to lead 62-59 at the final break in play. Panthers head coach Steve Sardi said "the final quarter was intense and we (Penrith) were getting getting physically challenged but managing to stay in front to the final whistle.SATURDAY: YL Men: Penrith Panthers 88 (Ben Wagenfeller 21 points, Jarrod Sorrenson 14, Laat Amat Gak 13, Brandon Gordon 9, Madol Chol 9) def Sutherland Sharks 51; YL Women: Penrith Panthers 65 (Taylah Clark 22 points, Kelli Sims 13, Tahlia Tupaea 10) def Sutherland Sharks 60 SUNDAY: Penrith Panthers 80 (Ben Wagenfeller 30 points, Laat Amat Gak 16, Curtleigh Albertyn 13) def Bathurts Goldminers 73.
