The Penrith Panthers Waratah Championship League (WCL) men's basketball team has scored a crushing 75-51 win over the Sutherland Sharks on Saturday night at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre (PVRSC), Cambridge Park. It was a big night for the Penrith Association, with the Youth League men also scoring a crushing 88-51 win over the Sharks YL men, whilst the Panthers Youth League women had a thrilling 65-60 win over the Sharks YL women - both games played as preliminaries on adjoining courts before the main game of the night. The Panthers WCL men were overwhelming favourites to defeat the injury-ravaged Sharks and played accordingly, racing away to lead 22-9 in the first quarter and 38-26 at half time. American import Ben Ellsworth had an uncharacteristically bad first half and looked to be all thumbs as he struggled to control the ball in the paint. Ellsworth's temporary loss of form had little impact on the game, with several other Penrith players stepping up to the mark and keeping the Panthers tracking smoothly through the first half. Panthers head coach Jeff Cooper said "I have to feel sorry for Coach Pete (Sutherland head coach Peter Rayner)". "The Sharks have lost several players through injury and could have been a very good team this year". "Still, tonight's game was an opportunity for me to run everyone for extended minutes and I was very pleased with rookie Ben Wagenfeller (who had only just finished playing in the Youth League game)" said Cooper. The Panthers WCL men head north up the Pacific Highway to Gosford this Saturday, playing the Central Coast Crusaders at 7pm at the Bridgecoast Stadium, Terrigal.
