The Penrith Panthers Youth League men’s team has grabbed a last-gasp 83-77 victory over an under-manned Hornsby Spiders, on Saturday night at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre (PVRSC) Cambridge Park, despite finishing the game on very shaky legs. The start of the game was all Penrith, with the home team putting on a polished display to lead 25-14 at the end of the first quarter, highlighted by strong efforts from Laat Amat Gak and Brandon Gordon. It would not however take long however for the wheels to almost totally fall off the Panthers game plan. The second and third quarters were perhaps more memorable for the Panthers lack of teamwork, in stark contrast to their outstanding effort at the start of the game. The visitors took full advantage of the situation, winning both of those periods of play to trail 37-32 at half time, then lead 55-54 at the end of the third quarter. Fortune however would not be on the side of the Spiders on the day, with one player leaving the game with a serious eye injury and another player dislocating a thumb, leaving the visitors with just four fit players at the death. That change of fortune was eagerly accepted by the Panthers as Gak, Ben Wagenfeller and Curtleigh Albertyn pushed the home team to a narrow but unconvincing 6-point win. Head coach Steve Sardi said “ After the first quarter we played in spurts". "We saw some spectacular performance of athleticisms by Laat Amat Gak, some incredible performance by Brandon Gordon but the team did not seem to play as a team". "It was certainly a closer game than it should have been and missing so many shots inside did not help but I was more concerned with the lack of defensive effort" said Sardi. "This team (Penrith) has some very talented players and it’s still early days but when they come together and play as one, I know what the results will be.” DIVISION ONE: Penrith Panthers 83 (Laat Amat Gak 26 points, Curtleigh Albertyn 12, Ben Wagenfeller 12, Ben Kearins 12) def Hornsby Spiders 77 (Filip Vasic 18 points, James Steiger 17, Alan Carswell 14, Stephen Badu 11, Liam Andrew 11) Bankstown Bruins 63 (N Musters 24,C Christodoulides 10,J Lopez 9) def Blacktown Storm 61 (A Agang 17,N Ebliane 15,P Kuzmanovic 11) DIVISION TWO: Parramatta Wildcats 103 (D Moser 29,J Chung 11,J Newham 11) dEF St George Sanits 38 (A Strbac 7,H Brown 6,T Jablonskis 5) Manly Warringah Sea Eagles 86 (W Taylor 18,A Grant 16,L Chen 15) def Blacktown Storm 66 (G Maglalang 17,J Nicolson 12,J D'Souza 10) Hornsby Spiders 58 (J Daoud 17,S Antelmi 13,P Mathew 12) def Hawkesbury Jets 54 (B Kins 11,G Kins 9,A Hodkinson 6) PHOTO: Ben Wagenfeller strides out to the hoop against the Spiders - photo by Noel Rowsell ( Apologies if the photo does not load, as the site Administrator is still experiencing problems.
