10,000 people sign to Keep Coogee a Village
Coogee 10,000th person signs petition photo:Linda Heller-Salvador
There was great jubilation and everyone was presented with badges made by residents to celebrate the event. A locally based photographer was on hand to mark the occasion.
The badges will be available to help raise funds to cover costs.
When residents and citizens of NSW first started collecting signatures one Saturday morning 8 weeks ago they had no idea they could collect 10,000 signatures. However it soon became apparent that residents and visitiors (tourists) alike were very angry about any plans that would destroy forever the low key village atmosphere of Coogee. Word got out and people sought the petition out. People from Maroubra, Kensington, Kingsford, La Perouse, Parramatta, Casula, Liverpool, Bondi, Hunters Hill, the Blue Mountains, Tamworth, Wagga Wagga ,the inner city of Sydney as well as Coogee, Clovelly and Randwick. The petitions include postcodes from suburbs across Sydney and all over NSW. Many signatories have gone on to express their outrage to the NSW Premier, the Planning Minister and Shadow Minister and the Department. People from allover Australia who holiday regularly in Coogee and visitors from overseas alike cannot believe that the NSW Government would seriously contemplate approving buildings many times the prevailing height and scale in the centre of the bay.

I really do hope the politicians are listening to us. We just want fairness and common sense to prevail. Locals aren't asking for special treatment, all we are saying is just because someone owns a lot of land, they shouldn't be able to break all the rules that the rest of us have to follow and respect.

The Hansard report for the most recent tabling of the petition in the Lower House by Paul Pearce, indicates that half the signatories are from the Coogee electorate (which takes in the northern half of Coogee, Bondi, Bronte etc). This is 10% of the voters of that electorate. The Keneally government risks losing the seat on this issue alone unless it acts to uphold the local zoning and subjects the developers to the same rules that apply to everyone else. Another interesting things is the large number of NSW citizens from outside of the Coogee electorate who have signed, making it an issue for other seats as well as Coogee.

Not sure why Christopher Cheung and Oakstand tried to influence a small group today. Wouldn't they be better off trying to do the right thing by the 10,000 voters?

Perhaps Kristina Keneally should remember that Heffron (her electoral district)does not have any beaches and that for many of her constituents, Coogee is 'their' beach village. I wonder how many of the 10,000 NSW voters who signed the petition live in Heffron?

The next election is going to be touch for Labour and the Keneally government is certainly 'on the nose'. The Coogee Bay Hotel proposal should be a wake up call for Labour. The community does not want it and to approve it will be a bad decision electorally for the government. What will it be Ms Premier?. If Dept Planning approves this development, you may as well start looking for another job....

10,000 people who care about Coogee with a passion and they are just the ones who have happened upon the petition in the past few weeks.

There are two politicians in the area opposed to this development, the second being the Liberal candidate for Coogee Bruce Notlety-Smith. Why don't both get together to make something happen?

The residents of Hornsby yesterday gave their Hornsby Hospital petition of 15,000 signatures to a politican who supports them outside Parliament House and there was lots of press about this. Why doesn't Paul Pearce do the same? Bruce could come along to if he likes. 10,000 signatures should not go unrecognised.

Keep up the good work. The only thing politicans will listen to is the threat of losing their jobs.

I would happily vote against the government if this high rise goes ahead. This sort of development has to be stopped because it will destroy the very thing that makes Coogee special. It is an iconic beach with an important heritage. No one goes to the beach to shop or seek "entertainment" facilities, we all go to enjoy the beach and its surrounds. We do not want a "town square" as there is a beautiful beach with amazing parks and walks. Our roads are at capacity now and cannot support thousands more on the roads. A development like this will destroy Coogee forever. No developer has the right to do that. Keep up the great work on the signatures and spreading the word!

Thanks Popsy. The petitions against over-development in Coogee are being tabled in both Houses most sitting weeks. All politicians have to listen to the situation in Coogee over and over. Liberal MLC [Dom Harwin]tables it in the Legislative Council and the local MP [Paul Pearce - Labor] tables the lower house version in the House of Assembly. Hansard records their speeches. We will keep the petiton going for as long as it takes to STOP this massively non-complying development.

This is a genuine grass roots reaction to a preposterous plan. A complying development would bring as many jobs and provide as much new housing and civic amenity as a non complying one.
Ron Green posts
Coogee has already done more than its fair share to house Sydney's growing population. Randwick City Council confirms this. There should be a halt to all in-fill development and all other developments that exceed the height limit, the FSR and set backs and which impose any more demands upon the roads and public transport. In the case of this proposal for the Coogee Bay Hotel traffic would be a huge issue. Vicar Street is a cul de sac and Arden Street is often a carpark. In summer all day every day traffic in Arden Street is impossible. What would it be like if the hotel site is developed to encompass high rise residential, more budget hotel accommodation, a supermarket, a picture theatre complex etc etc along with the present beer garden and liquor barn and extended sports bar and pokies gaming area/casino.

I lost the rest of my last posting. I mean to say wow 15,600 people signing to keep Coogee a Village what a great community campaign. We have lived in many places and travelled the world and still do. Coogee is where we chose to make our home 15 years ago. I have seen it sacrificed on the alter of cheap quick bucks too many times since the mid 1990s when the rezoning brought in the backpackers and the 24 hour licence brought in the binge drinking budget visitors. SInce then cheap developers have used any available opportunity to build characterless buildings that have taken the place of Coogee houses, added to the traffic and added nothing to everyone elses quality of living. With this over-the-top proposal, the resident have drawn a line in the sand.
